Union Miles Development Corporation is a non-profit organization, working to improve the quality of life in the Union Miles service area through community engagement, beautification, housing and economic development.
UMDC offers several programs and initiatives:
Lease Purchase Program. UMDC offers affordable single-family houses as a part of the lease-to-purchase program. This program offers 3-4 bedrooms and 1-1.5 bathroom housing options.
Investor Rehab Program. UMDC works to coordinate and link prospective owners and investors with rehab opportunities and programs such as Cuyahoga County Land Reutilization Company (CCLRC) homes for sale.
Union Miles Agricultural & Green Landscaping (UMAG). This program is an 8 week course with a curriculum of landscape for life. It supports entrepreneurial development specifically for the landscaping market through technical training in all components of greening. Financial education is provided as well as business startup assistance after graduation. Once students graduate, they are able to bid for work through UMDC grass cutting service.
Building Futures. This project was developed with the vision of a Greater Cleveland where one mistake does not permanently prevent an individual from a bright future for one’s self and family. The mission of Building Futures is to rehabilitate vacant, blighted houses throughout Ward 2 and train ex-offenders/returning citizens for employment and income producing opportunities in the fields of housing rehabilitation or property maintenance.
My Commitment, My Community (MyCom). Through a partnership with MyCom, UMDC has had an opportunity to create a leadership council for neighborhood youth, allowing them to develop new skills, acquire knowledge from sessions led by professionals in diverse fields, and establish a voice for Union Miles across Cleveland.
Planning & Placemaking. UMDC is focused on clarifying neighborhood identity through a range of initiatives, including welcome signage and banners, murals, streetscape improvements, intentional land use, reforestation partnerships, and general quality of life improvements.
Real Estate and Business Development. UMDC is pursuing new developments, each of which are designed to address larger, more systemic challenges across the neighborhood. Current projects involve veteran’s housing and service center, healthy food eateries, urban agriculture, workforce training facilities and new housing options.
Storefront Renovation. The Storefront Renovation Program helps neighborhood retail districts become more attractive, economically viable and diverse places to visit and shop by assisting in the design and funding of signage and the rehabilitation of traditional & eligible storefront buildings.
Senior Repair Program. Union Miles offers minor home repairs for elderly homeowners in the Union Miles neighborhood. Typical repairs for this program include: stairs, cabinetry, grab bars, railings, tree limb trimmings, a/c repair, heating repair, gutters, ramps, and flooring. (Seasonal program)
Paint Program. Residents in Ward 1 and Ward 2 of the Union Miles service area can apply for free paint from Union Miles, in partnership with Sherwin Williams. Wilson Jones, a contractor and instructor for our Building Futures program, will paint the home exteriors for a reduced rate than a typical contractor (Seasonal program)
Rain Barrel. This is a collaborative program designed to provide City of Cleveland residents with rain barrels free of charge in an effort to reduce storm water runoff, help residents save money and engage Cleveland youth.
Additional Services. UMDC provides technical assistance to local businesses and facilitates quarterly merchant meetings. In 2019, UMDC is building a partnership to collaborate with the neighboring Mount Pleasant NOW Development Corporation to provide Business Assistance outside of the traditional UMDC service area, and maximize collaborative staff impacts.
